VR/MR Garden Design and Planning

Using MR (Mixed Reality) for student-driven garden design, planning, and visualisation.

This project involves three Level 2 Landscaping students who are investigating ways of embedding VR within their curriculum. After showing the students what was possible with VR and also MR (Mixed Reality) they came up with the idea of using VR for Garden Design and Planning. After introducing the students to 'Gravity Sketch' on the MetaQuest 3S headsets they quickly got to work finding opportunties to use the mixed reality aspect of Gravity Sketch. Through experimentation, the student found three use cases

  1. Using Gravity Sketch with full-colour passthrough to combine real and virtual flowers, experimenting with different colour combinations and harmonies.

  2. Using the same technology to visually map out vegetable planting locations, streamlining the garden planning process.

  3. Using the same technology to explore flower planting options within an empty soil patch, virtually testing ideas before physically planting.

We are hoping that this workflow we have developed will be adopted by the course lecturers to:

- Help students visualise and prototype their designs more clearly

- Reduce waste in landscaping by minimizing errors in the physical implementation stage

- Diversify methods in which students are assesed
